Some memories that fuel my work are from working with families doing family therapy.
I always smile when I think about the toddlers who would pull up their tiny toddler chair at the beginning of my sessions with their siblings.
Seeing these two and three year old Black boys who wanted to be a part of therapy sessions was inspiring, because I knew they would grow up without a mental health stigma.
Having a therapist for their mental health needs was normalized for them, because it was modeled for them in their family at a young age. Although they weren’t able to participate in their sibling’s private therapy sessions, they knew that it was possible for them to have their own safe space when they needed it.
I have had child clients bring a timer to their therapy sessions, because they wanted to make sure they utilized every moment of their time in session. They showed up every week ready for therapy, and didn’t want to waste a minute of it.
As we focus on Minority Mental Health during this month, please remember that the mental health needs of children are important too. We can be so focused on our own mental health struggles, and life problems that we forget that children are struggling too.
The Back to School Season is about to start, and one of the things that should be at the top of the school supplies list is a child well-being checklist. A critical component of a child’s overall well-being is their mental wellness.
I am launching the Helping Black Boys Thrive Program to empower parents, educators, and youth leaders to unlock the full potential of Black boys.
This comprehensive six week online program will focus on prioritizing the mental health and well-being of Black boys, along with supporting their emotional, social and academic growth.
You will get a significant discount with the Early Bird price when you sign up by July 15th.
